今回はNPRのポッドキャスト「Indicator」から。最近のお肉の値上がりについて、政治家が精肉業界を寡占する企業の暴利(gouging)を糾弾しているしているだど、本当にそうなの？というのが今回のテーマ。みなさんも日々の買い物をしていて「これ値段上がったよね！？」という経験ありませんか？ガソリンに食パン、お菓子に今回のお肉。。資源高やコロナの影響といわれていますが、「便乗値上げなのでは！？」と思える商品もちらほらあります。そこに competitive market と uncompetitive market の違いを要因にしてくるところがアメリカ的ですよね。

ザックリこんな話

アメリカの政治家が最近のお肉の値上げが寡占的な企業による不当な値上げと糾弾しているけど、本当に便乗値上げなのか検証。疑う理由として「市場が数社の企業による寡占の状態(競争のない市場uncompetitive market)だと、一つの企業がインフレを理由に値上げをすると、ほかの企業もよそがやっていることなので値上げをする。企業間の暗黙の動きなので、証明するのは難しい」という論理展開。今回やり玉に挙がった精肉業界をターゲットにしたエコノミストの分析では、「この2年パンデミックにあわせて値段を吊り上げたという証拠のようなものはみつけれてない。インフレの大きな理由はお金の供給とそれに加えて今回は半導体の不足による車の価格の上昇のような通常じゃない状況だから、寡占企業の強欲さがインフレの強力な推進力にはなっていない」と分析。 詳細はトランスクリプション(Transcription)にて確認ください！！

伝えたいこと: 「彼の不適切な行いがここ数年の私たちのプロジェクトを台無しにした」

このイディオムを使うような機会には遭遇したくないですが、その際はこのgum up を使いたいですね。「時間の無駄(waste of time)」よりこちらの「台無し」の方が適切なシチュエーションってありますよね。

unlikely to be true (真実ではなさそうです)

SCOTT MORTON: If somebody were to say the price increase in meat, because of the pandemic, has nothing to do with the market structure of meat, I actually think that’s very unlikely to be true. I think the market structure of meat is for sure affecting how shocks are passed through.

伝えたいこと: 「きみが聞いた噂は本当ではなさそうです」

unlikely “something” で 「something ではなさそう」。見込みのない、可能性の低い事について話をするときに “not true” とするには断定調すぎるときに使えそうですね。こういう微妙なニュアンス便利ですね！
