今回はNPRのエンタメ系のポッドキャスト「POP CULTURE HAPPY HOUR」から。Three great karaoke songs(３つのグレートなカラオケソング)。日本のカラオケがKaraokeとなって世界で使われているのは誇らしいですね。アメリカでもカラオケは皆知っているけど、日本のカラオケとは様子が違うみたいでバーのステージに素人が上がって知らないお客に向かって歌うという。超ハードな文化となっているようです。日本のようにカラオケボックスで友人と自分の歌いたい歌を勝手に歌うのと全く別ものに生まれ変わってるようです。こうなると選曲一つでお客さんの反応も変わってきますよね。。そんなアメリカンスタイルのカラオケにあった3曲をNPRのコメンテーターが紹介します！！いったいどんな曲を紹介しているのでしょうか！？

ザックリこんな話

カラオケはある人にとっては居心地の悪いことだけど、好きな人にとっては一時でもロックスター気分が味わえるところ。カラオケによさそうな曲って何かをコメンテーターが議論したのが本エピソード。

あるコメンテーターの哲学はカラオケの歌い手には二種類いて、一つはマイクをもって自分の歌のうまさを見せるところと捉える歌い手ともう一つは、パーティーをまわしてくのが役目と捉える人。紹介する一曲目は後者の向けの曲。

1. “FRIENDS IN LOW PLACES” by GARTH BROOKS

GARTH BROOKS のこの曲はリリース当時カントリーのラジオ局で流れまくっていて(皆知ってる)、ビール片手にこぶしを突き上げて歌うにはこの曲が最適。それに(アメリカ式の)カラオケだと自分の歌唱力が人に批評されることにが気になってしまうけど、皆で歌える曲なので、気にせず歌えるのがポイント。

曲の終わりに沢山のコーラスの繰り返しがない曲が良い。次の曲への切り替えがしやすいので。あとただ威勢よく歌を歌うだけでなく、歌詞を届け歌を体現しないといけない。例えば

2. “IT’S ALL COMING BACK TO ME NOW” by Céline Dion

のような曲だと曲のあちこちで身もだえたり、膝をついたりして歌うような感じで歌ったり。この曲は殆どの人が歌えたり、一部知ってたりするので一緒に歌えるカラオケにはぴったりの曲。 3曲目はデュエット曲

3. “Shallow” by Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper

歌い手の片方が自信があって片方がない時に初心者の方がBradley Cooperのパートを歌い、もう一方が力量が目立つパートLady Gagaのパートを歌う。Lady Gagaのパートになると誰もBradley Cooperに興味がなくなるので、まさに人間の盾となってくれる。

HARRIS: …..the third thing that is important about a good karaoke song is your ability to not just sing the song but also perform and have the theatrics and really act out the song if it’s conveying a story, which is why my pick is, like, a mixture of ballad – you have to sing it, you have to belt it out – but also, you need to perform that song. You need to act it out and convey the lyrics. Let’s hear a little bit of that song.

HARRIS: I know. But it’s the type of thing where it doesn’t even matter if you hit those notes. It’s all about, really, the passion in your voice. And so it’s kind of a perfect song to have in the middle of the night, when you’re, like, not too far gone, but also it might be a little bit too ambitious early on because you don’t have that liquid courage in you.
